Last verified: June 10, 2026. Evolution requirements, mutagen costs, egg drop rates, breeding inheritance rates, and Splicing Station gene fragment counts are balance values that may change with patches. Evolution path data sourced from official Hatchery Games YouTube Species Overview playlist (9 videos, June 1โ€“9, 2026), RPGamer developer interview, and the free Steam demo.

    How Evolution Works

Each Voidling species has its own unique evolution tree with 31 possible forms (RPGamer interview with Creative Director Jonathan Rancourt). Each tree features 2 primary evolution branches leading to 16 final evolutions plus rare mutations (per official Species Overview videos). Evolution is branching โ€” at each evolution step, you choose one of multiple paths. The choice is permanent and instantly noticeable both visually and in gameplay feel.

    Key points about evolution:

    • Level-gated โ€” you need to reach a certain level before an evolution branch becomes available
    • Mutagen-based โ€” evolution consumes mutagens (earned through missions, found on planets, or crafted)
    • Branching choices โ€” each step presents 2+ options that change element, abilities, and stats
    • 31 forms per species โ€” not all 31 are on a single linear path. You explore branches and choose your route
    • 16 final evolutions per species (plus rare mutations) โ€” per official Species Overview videos
    • Each step changes gameplay โ€” evolutions are compared to changing weapon types in a shooter. An Organic poison-sniper plays completely differently from a Cryo brawler, and a Pyro berserker is nothing like a Cyber stance-switcher
    • Cerebrum Enhancer โ€” an upgrade system mentioned in Species Overview videos that enhances Voidling abilities beyond basic evolution

    ๐Ÿ’ก Plan Before You Evolve

Evolution choices are permanent. Read the tooltips at each branch point โ€” they show what element, ability, and stat changes you will get. If you're unsure, check the Voidlings Database for what we know about each species' confirmed paths.

Confirmed Evolution Paths โ€” All 9 Species

These evolution paths are confirmed through the official Hatchery Games YouTube Species Overview playlist (9 videos, June 1โ€“9, 2026) and cross-referenced with earlier developer interviews and the free Steam demo.

Note: For species where branch elements are marked "TBC," the full Species Overview video transcript is still being processed. We will update these entries as we verify each video's detailed ability and branch descriptions. All 9 species have their video content confirmed โ€” only the fine details of some evolution branch names are pending.

    Golden and Silver Eggs

Voidlings hatch from eggs. There are three known rarities (RPGamer developer interview):

    • Common eggs โ€” found regularly during missions. Hatch standard Voidlings.
    • Silver eggs โ€” hidden in some locations. Contain rare natures and variants.
    • Golden eggs โ€” hidden in specific locations. Hatch unique Voidlings with genes otherwise inaccessible through the normal evolution system. Example: Mutated Kwipeck (pre-evolved, boosted stats, extra jump).

Explore missions thoroughly. Golden eggs are rewards for players who search off the main path.

Note: Exact egg locations, drop rates, and the full list of golden/silver egg variants will be documented as the community discovers them.

Breeding โ€” Inheriting Attributes and Natures

Breeding allows you to combine two Voidlings to produce offspring that inherit traits from both parents. Based on the developer interview:

    • Attribute inheritance โ€” offspring inherit attribute values from parents. Breeding two high-Strength Voidlings produces a stronger offspring.
    • Nature inheritance โ€” rare "natures" can pass from parent to offspring. Some natures are exclusive to golden/silver egg hatches.
    • Generational scaling โ€” each generation can grow in strength, rewarding long-term breeding investment.
    • Cross-breeding โ€” details on cross-species breeding are limited. The system is being explored by the community during launch week.

Note: Exact inheritance rates, nature lists, and breeding mechanics are being documented as the community tests them. Check the in-game breeding UI for current information.

๐Ÿ’ก Breeding Strategy โ€” Start Simple

In the early game, focus on breeding within one species to stack attributes you need (e.g., Strength for melee, Agility for ranged). Save cross-species experiments for when you have a stable roster of evolved Voidlings.

Splicing Station โ€” Endgame Gene Crafting

The Splicing Station is the endgame system where you can "really go wild" (developer's words). It allows you to combine gene fragments from different Voidlings to create custom forms with unique abilities.

What the Splicing Station can do (RPGamer interview):

    • Transfer abilities โ€” move an ability from one Voidling species to another
    • Fuse elements โ€” combine two elements for dual-element Voidlings (e.g., Organic + Cryo)
    • Custom appearance โ€” mix body parts, colors, eye genes from different sources
    • Game-breaking synergies โ€” perk combinations not available through normal evolution
    • Create unique Voidlings โ€” some forms, like Gwigoon, can only be created through the Splicing Station

Gene fragments are discovered through evolution. Each evolution path you unlock adds new gene fragments to your library, expanding what you can craft at the Splicing Station.

Note: The exact number of gene fragments, splicing recipes, and all spliced Voidling forms will be documented as the community discovers them. The Splicing Station is an endgame system โ€” expect it to require significant investment to unlock and use effectively.

Evolution, Breeding, or Splicing โ€” What Order?

These three systems unlock progressively. The general flow:

    1. Evolve first โ€” get your starter Voidling through its first evolution branch. This is the core progression system and unlocks gene fragments for later.
    2. Breed second โ€” once you have multiple Voidlings with good attributes, breed to combine strengths and pass down rare natures.
    3. Splice last โ€” the Splicing Station is endgame. Build your gene fragment library through evolution before you invest in splicing.

    FAQ

How many evolution forms are there per species?

31 possible forms per species (RPGamer developer interview). Each species has 2 primary evolution branches leading to 16 final evolutions plus rare mutations (per official Species Overview videos). With 9 base species (Steam), the total is large. Not every form is on a single linear path โ€” branching choices mean you explore a subset each playthrough.

Can I undo an evolution choice?

Based on the interview description, evolution choices appear to be permanent per Voidling. You can capture or breed a new Voidling of the same species and evolve it down a different path.

Where do I find golden eggs?

Hidden in specific mission locations. Explore thoroughly โ€” golden eggs reward players who go off the main path. Exact locations will be documented as the community discovers them.

Can I breed different species together?

Details on cross-species breeding are limited in pre-launch sources. The community is testing this during launch week. Check the in-game breeding UI for compatibility.

When do I unlock the Splicing Station?

The Splicing Station is an endgame system. Exact unlock requirements will be confirmed as players reach it. Expect to invest significant time in evolution and breeding before splicing becomes available.

    What is Gwigoon?

Gwigoon is a confirmed spliced Voidling โ€” it can only be created through the Splicing Station by combining gene fragments from multiple species. It is not found in the wild or through normal evolution.
